Red Powderpuff – An exciting perennial shrub that is actually native to Central America, not Houston as the name would suggest. Each season, this mimosa-like plant rises from the ground in mid spring and quickly grows up to 7-8 feet tall by early summer. Beginning in late June to early July, tall flower stalks of bright red wispy blooms emerge and persist through early fall. The foliage is dark green and feathery, making this a very unique ornamental plant. Just be sure to give it plenty of room to grow, because it will eventually grow up to 5 feet wide with a large root system. In winter, this tropical shrub dies back to the ground, and we recommend pruning the old growth off in late winter to help promote early spring growth. Plant in full sun and in well-draining soil. Red Powderpuff is reliably drought tolerant but benefits from some summer irrigation.
