Texas Star Hibiscus – A truly striking Texas native perennial! The Texas Star Hibiscus sports glossy palmate foliage and bright red thin flowers atop leggy singular stems, which over time spread and create a cluster. It natively grows in marshes and along shallow creeks across the state, and can reach heights of up to 10 feet tall (though it is typically smaller when planted in a garden). The open and exposed form of the flower is enticing to our native pollinators who seem to relish rolling in the pollen. The flowers emerge in early summer and persist until early fall, where they are then replaced by seed pods that will dry and pop open, scattering the seeds. Plant in full to part sun and keep in moist soil. The edges of a pond or within a drainage area are perfect plant spots for this marshy perennial.
