Buddha Belly – A fun and tropical plant that can brighten up any porch or patio! The Buddha Belly (named for its swollen trunk) is actually a member of the Euphorbia family, and is considered to be a flowering succulent shrub. Although it is not cold hardy enough to be planted in the ground in Texas, it performs fantastically in our hot and humid summers, making it a perfect container plant. The large lobed leaves are intriguing enough on their own, but the bright orangish red flower stalks are where the party is truly at. These flowers bloom on and off throughout the year, and are replaced by green seed pods after a bloom cycle. These seed pods will dry and eventually dehisce (split open with enough force to fling the seeds far from the parent plant), so we recommend removing the seed pods as they begin to turn brown. Should you want to try your hands at DIY propagation, these seeds are remarkably easy to grow, and are a fantastic gift for friends and family! If growing outdoors, keep this plant out of direct sunlight. A covered porch or patio is ideal. If growing it indoors, keep your Buddha Belly near a bright window where it can recieve lots of indirect sunlight. This plant doesn't need to be watered very often, but we recommend giving it a drink every couple of weeks.
