Velvetpod Mimosa – A true west Texas wonder! Velvetpod Mimosa has been planted in our Garden since 2002, and to this day is a shrub that stops visitors in their tracks. With delicate foliage and multiple trunks, this is already a plant to be appreciated, but the flowers are the true showstoppers. In early summer, small bottlebrush-like flowers emerge on the branches, which start out a bubblegum pink and slowly fade to white as time passes. This color progression means that for most of the summer, the entire shrub is covered in an array of pink and white blooms that are heavily favored by our native bees (the large carpenter bees seem to have a particular affinity for them). When the blooms fade away in early fall, they are replaced by small seed pods that hang ornamentally on the branches. This shrub acts as a die-back perennial in our climate, but will pull through a mild winter with only slight damage. As such, it only reaches about 4 feet in height in our Garden. Plant in full sun and in very well draining rock soils. This wonderful native is particularly drought tolerant and only needs minor waterings through the harshest parts of summer.
