Purple Shamrock – Perhaps the most striking and vibrant foliage of any plant in our Garden. Purple Shamrock is a small rhizomatous (spreads via rhizomes in the soil) plant with vivid purple foliage and light purple flowers. Although it dies back to the ground every winter, it reemerges in early spring and persists until the first frost, blooming off and on the entire growing season. In the Garden, you'll notice this plant has naturalized itself beneath tree canopies, within sedge borders, and pretty much any other shady place it can find. Luckily for everyone, it has extremely shallow roots that are easy to pull up by hand, so you don't have to worry about it taking over your yard. If that is a concern, though, then fear not because it also makes a stellar houseplant! As long as its placed near a bright window, Purple Shamrock will add a nice splash of color to any room of your house. Keep well watered and out of direct sunlight.
