Slash Pine – A large pine native to the southeastern portion of the United States, with some populations even occuring in east Texas. This tree can grow up to nearly 100 feet tall at maturity, with attractive chunky bark that is mottled orange and gray. The needles are typically bright green, with some genetics causing them to have a slight blue tint. When grown in full sun, the overall form of the tree is very upright with a spreading canopy that provides excellent shade. Although we have not yet trialed this tree in the Garden, we are hopeful that it will perform well in both our summer heat and winter frosts, just as well as it would in its native habitat. Plant in full sun and in well-draining soil. Slash Pine is reasonably drought tolerant, but should be regularly watered during the summer in order to discourage the infestation of pine beetles.
