Pink Panther Japanese Flowering Apricot – A drop-dead gorgeous deciduous flowering tree native to China. The esteemed J.C. Raulston experimented with this species of tree in the southeastern United States and helped select cultivars that could handle heat and mild winters, and 'Pink Panther' is our favorite of those cultivars. The bark is glossy and peely, with an almost burgundy tone. In early January when the branches are totally bare, small pink flowers emerge and densely cover the canopy so that it looks like a pink puffball from a distance. These fragrant blooms persist for about 2 weeks and then fall to the ground, once again leaving the trees branches bare until the foliage emerges in early spring. 'Pink Panther' only grows to be about 12 feet tall, making it perfect for smaller yards and understory gardens. Plant in full to part sun and in well-draining soil. 'Pink Panther' was selected due to its vigor even in years with a low amount of chill hours, making it a perfect selection for Texas yards.
