Stemodia lanata

Woolly Stemodia – A beautiful silver-blue groundcover native to the coastal plains of Texas and Mexico! This delightful perennial is fast growing, adaptable, and gorgeous. The small leaves are coated in fine hairs that give it a silver tone and slightly fuzzy texture, making it a valuable ornamental plant that sticks out against typical green foliage. In early summer, small light purple flowers emerge and are a good source of nectar for very small pollinators. Over time, Woolly Stemodia creates runners and will form a large, dense patch up to about 3 feet wide. These tendril-like stems make it perfect for hanging over the edges of walls or large pots, but also works as a great groundcover, as can be seen right outside our front office at the Garden. Plant in full sun and in well-draining soil. Although it can tolerate stints of drought, Woolly Stemodia looks its best and is most dense when it is irrigated regularly in the summer.
