Chinese Ground Orchid – This is one of those one-of-a-kind plants that will make you the envy of your neighbors. The Chinese Ground Orchid is an intriguing herbaceous perennial that emerges in early spring, first shooting up its rigid strap leaves, and later its delicate purple orchid flowers. These vibrant blooms have a delicate, almost rose-like fragrance that hangs lightly in the air as you pass by, enticing you to stoop down to its level and get a deeper whiff. In our climate, this plant tolerates our winters just fine, although it will die-back to the ground in early winter. Over time, the bulb-like roots under the surface will spread and create a nice colony of clonal plants, which can easily be dug up and transplanted. Plant in full shade and in well-draining soil, as this plant does not like to sit in any moisture.
