Rose of Sharon – This outstanding double-bloomer is named after the late Dr. Sam McFadden, a former professor at the University of Florida- Gainesville who spent much of his career focused on plant breeding. Growing up to 6 feet tall with multiple branches, this Rose of Sharon cultivar showcases gorgeous pink double blooms, almost giving it the appearance of a rose bush. You can find a beautiful example of this plant near our retention pond, near the formal entrance to the Garden. The foliage is dark green and dense, making it a wonderful statement piece in any yard, even when it’s not in bloom. Plant in full sun and in well-draining soil. Although it can handle short stints of drought, Rose of Sharon performs best when irrigated regularly, or planted near a body of water.
