New York Ironweed – A tall herbaceous perennial native to much of the eastern coast of the United States. New York Ironweed is a die-back perennial in our climate, but grows to be about 6-7 feet tall every year, with large textured leaves and bright green stems. In mid to late summer, vivid purple blooms open all over the plant, drawing interest from all sorts of pollinators, but especially our native butterflies. It natively grows in pastures and in drainage ditches, so it needs to be well watered throughout the year in order to stay bright and green. Plant in full or part sun and keep the soil around it moist.
