Juniperus flaccida

Drooping Juniper – This weeping conifer was originally collected by John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld in Hidalgo, Mexico in 1998. Growing up to about 15 feet in our Garden, but closer to 40 feet in its native habitat, the Drooping Juniper is rare in cultivation, despite being native to parts of Big Bend National Park. The foliage is green and droops heavily from the canopy, with many of the lower branches drooping as far as the ground, making it an attractive and unique ornamental conifer. In late summer through fall, blueish green seed cones emerge on the branches. Plant in full sun and in very well-draining soil. Juniperus flaccida is extremely cold tolerant and drought tolerant, making it an ideal candidate for Texas yards as we look to plant hardy trees in the face of climate change.
