Tamaulipas Mexican Scrub Palm – This trunkless palm was first collected by John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld in Mexico in 1989, with a second collection being made in 1995. For many years, this blue-toned fan palm was though to be particularly large form of Sabal minor (Dwarf Palmetto), but was officially published as its own independent species in 2025 by Juniper Level Botanic Garden. At maturity, this palm can grow up to 8 feet tall and 10 feet wide, with fronds that have a wingspan of up to 4 feet each! In his 2002 article, The Palms of Northeast Mexico, Carl referred to this palm as "Mexican minor" due to its resemblence to the much smaller S. minor; he also made note that the seeds of what we now know to be S. tamaulipensis were, "very large and flat like an M&M’s candy but colored a rich mahogany." We are so glad that this species is finally getting the recognition it deserves! Plant in full to part sun and in well-draining soil. S. tamaulipensis is exceptionally cold hardy and drought tolerant, requiring very little maintenance throughout the year. We hope you enjoy.
