Aesculus pavia

Red Buckeye – Native to east Texas, this small understory tree is a fantastic candidate for adding early spring color to your garden. In late March, bright red to yellow-red flower stalks emerge from the tops of each branch, producing tubular flowers that are a favorite amongst migrating hummingbirds and butterflies. After the flowers fall, they are replaced by large brown seed pods that store the classic buckeye seed within. By mid summer, the palmate leaves will begin to fall from the branches as the tree enters a summer dormancy in order to resist heat and drought. Plant in part to full shade, and keep the soil moist. Red Buckeye makes for a lovely woodland garden plant.
