Green Goblet Agave – This agave stands like a troop of attentive soliders in front of our front office, where we have a drift of seven plants that create a solid green wall. ‘Green Goblet’ was brought to the garden in 1992 by John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld after a collecting trip in the San Carlos mountains of Mexico. All of the other Agave x pseudoferox (x protamericana x gentryi) in the surrounding areas during this trip were blue-toned, with the exception of this plant, which caught the eye of John and Carl. At maturity, this agave grows to be 5 feet tall and up to 8 feet wide with intensely dark green leaves and gray margins. Plant in full sun and very well-draining soil. This agave is extremely drought tolerant and can tolerate temperatures as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit without damage. Certainly one of the crown jewels of the garden!
