Rio Grande Beebrush – This woody shrub is native to southern Texas and much of northern Mexico, where it naturally grows to be about 12 feet tall. In climates like ours where the winters tend to be a bit more severe, new growth tends to die back, so we cut our small shrub back in December. When it reemerges in spring, it grows to be about 4 feet tall, although we suspect that over time it will continue to grow slightly taller every year. In late spring through fall, delicate airy branches of light purple flowers emerge, enticing all of the local pollinators, especially the bees. The foliage is also delicate, and clings tightly to the branches. This is an extremely hardy shrub that needs next to no supplemental water, except in the driest parts of summer. Plant in full sun and then sit back and enjoy watching the bees and butterflies descend on its blooms.
