Flame Acanthus – A staple of drought tolerant gardening in Texas, and for good reason! Flame Acanthus is a woody shrub that produces bright orange honeysuckle-like flowers from early summer through late fall, and is widely enjoyed by our local butterflies and hummingbirds. Native to the dry grasslands of southern Texas, Flame Acanthus is a plant that you'll never have to concern yourself with, even in the worst parts of our summer. A tiny bit of supplemental watering during droughts will help ensure that it stays green and flowering, but otherwise needs no supplemental watering. This showy shrub typically grows to be about 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide, and thrives in full, scorching sunlight. You can see some excellent examples of Flame Acanthus planted in front of our front office, where they are kept pruned into a dense shrub.
