Begonia heracleifolia

Starleaf Begonia – An exceptionally cold hardy begonia originally collected by John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld in Puebla in 1995. The foliage is star-shaped and a dark purple to green with lighter green stripes down the central veins. In late spring, flower stalks emerge and are topped with clusters of a pale pink flowers that wave dreamily in a nice breeze. At maturity, this rare begonia grows to be about 1 foot tall and 1.5 feet wide. Begonia heraclefolia is a rhizomatous species, meaning the roots contain a large storage structure beneath the soil surface. It is thanks to this rhizome that this begonia can survive our cold winters and reemerge good as new each spring! Plant in full shade and in well-draining soil. Keep well-watered, especially throughout the summer.
