Wooly Butterflybush – This intriguing Texas native is sure to stick out to human and insect spectators alike! The Wooly Butterflybush is a woody perennial that bears striking silver foliage (which is fuzzy and soft as a lambs ear) and spherical orange flowers. At maturity, this shrub can grow up to 6 feet tall with long trailing stems that tend to weep towards the ground if left unpruned. You can see one such example of this near our front office in our Trans-Pecos themed bed. Beginning in early summer, small orange flowers appear across the canopy and act as a beacon for all manner of pollinators, but as the name would suggest, butterflies are the most common. Wooly Butterflybush is the perfect addition to any xeric, native, or pollinator garden. Plant in full sun and in very well-draining soil. Wooly Butterflybush can handle periods of drought, but flowers best when it has some irrigation during the summer.
