Mexican Bird of Paradise – An airy perennial shrub that produces racemes of highlighter-yellow flowers from late spring through fall. Slender, brittle stems grow to about 7 feet tall in our climate, and are adorned with delicate round foliage that flutters lightly in the breeze. The blooms look similar to a pea-flower and are favored heavily by the native carpenter bees. We have had great success with cutting the stems back to the ground in late fall prior to any winter freezes, but have also recently learned that it will tolerate mild winters and even short freezes without this maintenance! Plant in full sun and in well-draining sandy soil. Mexican Bird of Paradise is exceptionally drought tolerant, but would appreciate the occasional watering during the driest parts of summer in order to continue blooming.
