We previously had this plant listed as Casimiroa pringlei, but have since corrected its label thanks to an observant Garden member. Originally collected by John Fairey and his collegues in Neuvo Leon in 1989, Casimiroa greggii is definitely one of the most tasty plants in our collection. Although a mostly unassuming trifoliate evergreen for much of the year, in late summer you will notice small yellow fruits, about the size of a quarter, begin to ripen amongst the branches. When these small fruits are fully ripe, they are soft to the touch and are easy to harvest. The skins of the fruits are bitter and unpalatable, but the inner flesh is creamy and tastes similar to banana! The tree grows up to 20 feet at maturity, and usually begins setting fruit about 5 years after being planted in the ground. This evergreen is also extremely drought tolerant and cold hardy (no damage down to 10 degrees Fahrenheit), and has slender multiple branches that give it a very sculptural appearance.
