Chionanthus retusus

Chinese Fringe Tree

Chinese Fringe Tree – This tree is one of the hallmarks of our garden, and if you've ever visited us in late March, you are very familiar with the intensity of its blooms. Beautiful pure white fringe blooms cover this plant for roughly two weeks at the end of March, which are then replaced with small green-blue fruits. Even when the flowers fade, the Chinese Fringe Tree offers up beautiful patterned bark and glossy round leaves for us to marvel at for the rest of the year. These plants being sold are seedlings from the two large trees planted at the entrance to our garden, which are now 25 years old. John Fairey trained these trees to take on a "shrub on steroids" appearance, but Chinese Fringe Tree can also be limbed up into a mid-sized tree, or pruned back into a managable shrub. The choice is yours to make!
