Texas Mountain Laurel – One of the classic native trees of the Texas Hill Country. This evergreen tree produces racemes of intensely fragrant purple flowers in early spring, which have been compared to smelling like grape Kool-Aid. After the flowers fall (the petals of which make a lovely purple mulch on the ground), they are replaced by thick seed pods containing bright red seeds. Traditionally, these seeds have been used by Native American tribes as ornamentation for clothing and jewelry. As a Texas native tree, it is an important source of nectar for local pollinators. At maturity, this tree reaches 20 feet in height, but can also be pruned and trained into a shrub or hedge form. Once established, this tree is exceedingly cold hardy and drought tolerant.
