Blue Ginger – This is the very first plant that John Fairey ever planted in our Garden, back in 1971! Although not technically a member of the ginger family, Blue Ginger sports the upright cane stems, broad foliage, and bright blooms that are often associated with gingers. From late spring through late summer, multiple long canes emerge from an underground rhizome, growing up to around 4-6 feet on average. In late summer and early fall, large clusters of indigo/purple blooms form at the end of each cane, slowly opening over the course of a month and exposing dazzling purple and yellow flowers. The tall, slender form of this blooming perennial makes it perfect for smaller yards or tight spaces. Plant in full shade and in moist soil. Irrigate regularly, especially in the hot summer months, to promote optimal blooms.
