Dioon edule (Virgin's Palm) at The John Fairey Garden nursery in Hempstead, Texas

Dioon edule

Virgin's Palm

Virgin's Palm – This hardy cycad was collected on numerous occasions by John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld in Mexico, in the years 1993, 1994, 1999, and 2002. Plants grown from seed collected on these multiple expeditions still stand proudly in our Garden today, with perhaps the most well known specimen residing in our Pool Plaza. This palm-like cycad has long, rigid feather leaves with a blue tint radiating from a central base. Although it is slow growing, Dioon edule will eventually grow to be about 6 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide. Although it is relatively cold hardy, in harsh frosts it may defoliate and reemerge in the spring. Plant in full to part sun and in very well-draining soil.
