American Strawberry Bush – A bizzare deciduous shrub native to the woodlands of the southeastern United States. In mid fall, small reddish pink seed pods dangle from the branches, looking similar to a strawberry from a distance, hence the name. As these seed pods ripen, they slowly split open, exposing bright red seeds within, which fall to the ground and are quickly eaten by birds and other woodland critters. This bush can grow up to 8 feet in our climate, and has an open, airy canopy that stretches out to about 4-5 feet wide. Although it can tolerate full shade, Strawberry Bush performs best under dappled sunlight, or when given morning sun. It also prefers to live in moist soils, so keep it well watered, especially in summer.
