Pineapple Guava – You won't find this fruit in the grocery store, so why not try growing it yourself? Pineapple Guava is a bulletproof South American shrub that handles our Texas heat like a champ. Growing up to 10 feet at maturity, this evergreen shrub is truly the gift that keeps on giving. In late spring, pink flowers with vibrant red stamens emerge, opening over the green foliage like a fireworks show. In early fall, small green fruits take their place, which reportedly taste like a combination of pineapple and guava (hence the name). While the flowers are mostly self-fertile, many gardeners report increased fruit production when a second plant is nearby. These fruits bruise easily and begin rotting soon after being picked, so it's not something you'll ever see on the shelf at HEB, but it makes for a wonderful snack while gardening. While ours is being grown as a shrub, you can easily train this plant into a tree or espalier, or leave it as a potted patio plant. Just make sure it gets full sun and stays well watered through the summer, and you're sure to be rewarded with unique fruits to share with your friends and family!
