Hamelia patens

Scarletbush

Scarletbush – An aptly named shrub sporting bright red flowers against a backdrop of reddish green foliage. Native to southern Florida and much of the American tropics, this plant acts as a die-back perennial in our climate, and grows up to 6-7 every year. The foliage and branching tends to stay dense, eliminating the need for much pruning, and creating a beautiful rounded shrub. The tubular red flowers, which bloom spring-fall, are a great nectar source for hummingbirds and butterflies, earning it the secondary name of Hummingbird Bush. To keep this shrub happy, plant it in full sun and keep it well-watered through the summer!
