Ilex rubra

This small evergreen holly was first collected by John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld in the San Carlos Mountains of Mexico in 1991, and they are seemingly the first collectors to have introduced it to ornamental horticulture. Only growing to a max height of 30 feet at maturity, Ilex rubra has small, thick leaves that grow densely in the trees canopy, making it great for privacy hedges or a shade canopy. In late summer, female trees produce dark red berries that are a great food source for native birds. Plant in full sun and in well-draining soil.
