David's Keteleeria – A warm climate conifer that offers much of the same ornamental value as the difficult-to-grow fir tree. John Fairey purchased his first Keteleeria davidiana from Camellia Forest Nursery in 1991, and it is still growing stoic and strong in our Arboretum today! Although they can grow over 100 feet in their native habitats in China and Taiwan, our 35 year old tree is only about 40 feet tall and 20 feet wide. This evergreen has thick needles and long cones that sit upright on the branches, which have a very ornamental effect as they turn from green to brown in late summer. Lucky for us, Keteleeria davidiana seems to thoroughly enjoy our hot and humid summers, while also taking our winter frosts in stride. For anyone searching for a unique conifer, this is the one for you! Plant in full sun and give it plenty of room to stretch out. Once established, this tree is very drought tolerant.
