Carolina Wolfberry – A thorny semi-evergreen perennial shrub native to southeast Texas. The delicate foliage and scrubby branches give it the appearance of being a desert plant, but this small bush actually thrives in marshes and along wet clay flats. In summer, small purple flowers adorn the branches, eventually maturing into small red berries that help nourish the birds and small mammals of its native ecosystems. At maturity, Carolina Wolfberry grows to be about 4 feet tall, with branches that can extend it to 5 feet wide. Plant in full sun and in rocky wet soils. Although it can tolerant short stints of drought, it looks its best when given some supplemental watering during the summer.
