Redbay – A beautiful evergreen tree that grows upwards of 50 feet in our climate. The foliage is dense and dark green, and is lightly fragrant when crushed. In late summer, small blueish black fruits emerge on the branches, which are a valuable food source for many native birds and small mammals. Although these small fruits are not edible for humans, they are intriguing due to its bright green inner flesh that strongly resembles its distant cousin, the avocado! Plant in full sun and in well-draining soil. This tree natively grows along coastal plains, so it performs best when regularly watered, especially in the late summer months.
