Mexican Plum – Probably one of the tastiest Texas native trees, Mexican Plum is a small (up to 15 foot) decidious tree that produces black-purple fruit. In early spring, the bare branches become covered in fragrant white blooms that persist for about two weeks, adding color to the landscape during a time where most plants are just starting to wake up. If you're a fan of tart/sour flavors, then you'll love the small plums that ripen in mid-late October. If that flavor profile isn't for you, then they also make a wonderful jam/jelly, or you can leave them for the squirrels (who we often have to compete with when collecting these fruits). Although it can handle full sun, Mexican Plum looks its best when provided with some relief from the scorching afternoon sun, and also does quite well underneath a canopy. Being a Texas native, it is very drought tolerant, but will need some supplemental watering while getting established.
