Chinese Quince – A small deciduous tree that produces large edible fruits. Growing up to 15 feet in our climate, the Chinese Quince has a very upright growth form with a tight oval canopy, making it a perfect fruit tree for small yards or those with limited planting space. The leaves are dark green and textured, and sit upon a trunk with flaky bark, making it an attractive ornamental tree even when it's not fruiting. In mid spring, small pink blooms emerge on the branches and are lightly fragrant. These blooms are replaced by large oval-shaped yellow fruits that ripen around October, with a flavor similar to apples or pears. These fruits taste great fresh off the tree, but are particularly yummy when baked into a pie or jam! In late fall, the foliage turns to a nice reddish-orange color before falling to the ground. Plant in full or part sun, and keep well watered, especially in late summer. If the tree gets put through prolonged periods of drought, the fruits will drop before ripening.
