Tongue Fern – A delightful epiphytic fern native to China, Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. This fern grows via rhizome, allowing it to shallowly put down roots in the top layer of mulch, across tree branches, atop mucky rocks, and so much more. Each frond grows stright up, seemingly emerging from the ground, and is about 4-6 inches long. The front of each frond is green and slightly fuzzy with rusty orange backsides. When grown in a large patch as a groundcover, these vertical fronds create an interesting texture in the landscape. Because it is an epiphyte, the Tongue Fern needs very little substrate to perform well, so it can be used in a variety of creative ways. Try training it to grow up a tree trunk, or allow it to fill in the cracks of stepping stones. The possibilities are nearly endless! Plant in full shade, or in an area where it only recieves early morning sun. Tongue Fern is hardy and can withstand short stints of drought, but it grows most vigorously when regularly irrigated.
