This gorgeous semi-evergreen oak is very likely related to the Vasey Oak, but since we are not entirely positive of its identity, we will call it Quercus aff. vaseyana (aff. stands for affinis, a Latin word used to describe a plant that resembles a known species). This oak was originally collected in 1991 by John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld in the San Carlos mountains of Mexico. In fact, in John’s journal for this trip, he originally identified it as Quercus sartorii, but that has since been disproven. Regardless of its true name, this medium sized oak tree has withstood the test of time and earned its place in our Garden. The leaves are small and bright green, and the trunk is an attractive gray that quickly becomes covered in a mosaic of lichens and mosses. Growing up to about 20-25 feet at maturity, this oak is perfect for smaller yards, and it provides excellent shade under its canopy. This oak has proven to be extremely cold tolerant, sustaining no damage in temperatures as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. While it is reliably drought tolerant, it will need some extra watering during its first couple of years in the ground. Plant in full sun.
