White Oak – A classic deciduous oak native to much of United States. Growing up to 100 feet tall, this stellar tree is long lived and beloved for its shaggy bark, highly lobed leaves, and exquisitely red fall color. One of the best examples in our Garden, which was planted in 1985, towers over the Gallery and provides dense shade for the woodland plants beneath it. For much of the year, the large lobed leaves are bright green and shimmer gently on the branches during a breeze. However, in late fall the color changes dramatically to a bright crimson red. The overall form of this large tree is upright with a wide-spreading canopy that invites you to stare upwards in awe. In order to keep it happy and to attain the best fall color show, water this oak regularly, especially in the summer. Plant in full sun and in well-draining soil.
