Chisos Oak – John Fairey collected this tree on three separate occasions in the San Carlos mountains in Mexico, starting in 1989. The semi-evergreen foliage of this mid-sized tree is serrated and glossy, making it an attractive addition to any yard. In April, the emerging new growth is a peach pink color and has a soft, fuzzy texture. Although the name that John identified this plant by (Quercus canbyi) is listed as “Least Concern” by the IUCN, one of its synonym names (Quercus graciliformis) is listed as “Critically Endangered”. Regardless of its conservation status, this tree is a favorite among garden staff! It thrives in full sun and low water environments, and is very drought tolerant once established.
