Mexican Royal Oak – A tree truly deserving of its title. This evergreen oak was first collected by John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld in 1998 in Xicotepec de Juarez. Growing upwards of 50 feet, the Mexican Royal Oak truly stands out from the rest thanks to its large, blueish, and slightly fuzzy foliage. In spring and fall, new flushes of foliar growth emerge a dusty pink to orange color. In its native habitat in the Mexican cloud forests, this oak is routinely exposed to cold temperatures, making it reliably frost tolerant even during our winters. In fact, according to a 2008 YuccaDo catalog, the Mexican Royal Oak withstood temperatures as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit with minimal damage! We have also found this tree to be reasonably drought tolerant once established, but it will need regular waterings for its first two summers. Plant in full sun and in well draining soil.
