Japanese Blue Oak – A truly reliable evergreen oak native to Japan. As the story goes, John Fairey was gifted acorns from this tree long ago, and attempted to sell seedlings through YuccaDo Nursery. Unfortunately, at the time no one was aware of this species or how versatile it is in the Texas climate, so they went unsold for a couple years before John decided to plant them throughout the Garden. This ended up working fantastically, because the large evergreen leaves now provide excellent shade year-round in our Woodland Garden! As it matures, this oak produces multiple smooth-barked trunks that grow up to 50 feet tall, with dense, glossy green leaves that look fantastic no matter the time of year. The Japanese Blue Oak is extremely cold hardy, showing no signs of damage in temperatures as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Plant in full sun and in well-draining soil. In order to keep it looking healthy and happy, this oak appreciates regular irrigation, especially in the summer.
