Quercus grisea

Gray Oak

Gray Oak – A beautiful and reliable evergreen oak native to Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. Acorn for this oak was collected in 2024 by our Director of Horticulture and Living Collections, Wally Wilkins, along the side of the highway in Arizona. The foliage is small and a striking silver-green that definitely makes it stand out in the landscape. At maturity, this small oak only grows to be about 30 feet tall, but is often shorter, especially in its native habitat. In general, this tree is relatively new to our Garden, with the first speciman being planted in 2021, but we think it makes a valuable addition to our collection as we look towards planting more cold hardy and drought tolerant plants for the future. Plant in full sun and in very well-draining soil. Although it is drought tolerant once established, it will need to be well-watered for its first two years in the ground.
