Chinkapin Oak – A large deciduous oak tree native to more than half of the United States, as well as parts of Mexico. This tree was originally collected by John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld in 1991 in the San Carlos mountains of Mexico, with a second collection being made in 2006. Growing quickly to be anywhere from 45 to 100 feet tall at maturity, the Chinkapin Oak is a popular landscaping tree in residential yards and commercial properties. Favored due to its large ovate leaves with gentle lobes, this oak is ideal for providing dense shade for much of the year. In late fall, the leaves change to a vibrant orange-red color before falling to the ground. Plant in full sun and water regularly for the first two years until established.
