Monterrey Oak – This beautiful semi-evergreen oak gets its species name from the many different forms that its leaves can take on. John Fairey and his collegues collected acorns from this oak on three separate expeditions (1989, 1999, and 2005) to the Sierra Madre Oriental in Mexico, and we have still have many of the mature trees in the Garden today! At maturity, the Monterrey Oak can grow up to 80 feet tall, with wide reaching branches that help create a sweeping canopy. In early spring, the new growth emerges and is a peachy-pink color. The bark is textured and somewhat chunky/flaky. Plant in full sun and in well-draining soil. Although it is reasonably drought tolerant once established, it will need to be watered through its first two summers.
