The Shumard Oak is best known for its vibrant red fall color and attractive lobed leaves, making it a valued ornamental oak. Beyond the foliage, other features include lichen-covered bark and plenty of acorn production (which are important forage for native mammals). You've likely seen this tree planted all over neighborhoods and parking lots, as it stays relatively small (usually grows to about 50 feet tall). fast growing, and easy to take care of. Plant in full or part sun and in well-draining soil. Although it is drought tolerant, it will need to be watered for its first two summers.
