A beautiful unidentified oak from Mexico! John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld first collected this deciduous oak in 1991, and revisited for another round of acorn collecting in 1992. The attractive foliage is highly serrated, and emerges a bright peachy-red color in early spring. In winter, it is untouched by our short frosts and is considered very cold hardy. At maturity, 'San Carlos' stands at about 30 feet tall, making it ideal for those with smaller yards or limited planting space, and has a decently wide canopy that provides excellent shade (if you've ever been on a tour of the Garden, you've most certainly rested beneath one of our 'San Carlos' oaks). Plant in full sun and in well-draining soil. Although it is drought tolerant once established, it will need to be watered for its first two summers.
