Gold Barr Southern Live Oak – This variegated live oak came to us in 2020 from Bill Barr, who found it nestled amongst hundreds of other live oak seedlings at Tree Town Nursery. Luckily for us, Bill had no need for it and bestowed it upon us! That seedling is now about 8 feet tall and has the most amazing variegated foliage we've ever seen, especially on an oak tree. Throughout the year as the new growth flushes out, the foliage is light yellow and mottled with green spots. As the foliage gets older, it reverts back to being nearly fully green, helping supply the necessary chorophyll to keep the tree alive. In mid summer when the new growth is at its peak, the tree looks like its backed by a golden halo; it truly is a sight to behold! It has now been in the ground for 6 years and has been growing consistently, so we expect that it will be long-lived and eventually quite large like a typical live oak. Only time will tell. Plant in full sun and in well-draining soil.
