Rhapidophyllum hystrix

Needle Palm

Needle Palm – This is one of those times where the common name of a plant is a perfect descriptor. The Needle Palm is a large evergreen palm native to the Southeast United States. At maturity, it can grow up to 6 feet tall and 8 feet wide, and quite a few of ours in the Garden have perhaps even grown a little taller than that! The large fan-like fronds are bright green and slightly glossy, and grow densely on the short trunk. This trunk is what gives the palm its name, for it is covered in long (up to 10 inches!) sharp needles that blend in with the color of the trunk and can easily puncture anyone or anything that gets too close. You will find a great number of this cold-hardy palm in our Woodland Garden and North Dry Garden, as they are a large evergreen plant that can be useful when creating “garden rooms”, barriers, or privacy screens. Plant in part sun to full shade and keep well-watered.
