Golden Light Senecio – This blooming herbaceous perennial was first collected by John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld in Puerto Purificacion in 1993. Within just a couple years in the ground, this multi-stemmed perennial will reach 6-8 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide. The leaves are large and lobed with small hairs that give it a fuzzy texture. In mid spring and mid fall, clusters of bright yellow daisy-like flowers emerge on top of the canopy, lighting up the landscape and providing lots of pollen to native bees. These flowers persist on the plant for upwards of 3 weeks before being replaced by fluffy dandelion-like seed heads. Golden Light Senecio has proven to be reliably cold hardy in our climate, although we do cut it back to the ground in late winter to promote early spring growth. Plant in part sun and in well-draining soil. Although it can be drought tolerant, Golden Light Senecio looks its best when irrigated regularly in the summer.
