Firecracker Fern – A gorgeous blooming perennial (not a fern) with a wide variety of uses! The stems are dainty and square with small ovate leaves decorating them, and as they grow they will weep and cascade to the ground. In late spring, small bright red tubular flowers emerge and will continue to bloom until late fall. These flowers are like a beacon for hummingbirds and butterflies, who are constantly swarming the planting in front of our office. The cascading growth habit makes it perfect for hanging baskets, tall pots, wall overhangs, or even just planted in the ground! The stems root easily when they lie across the soil, so over time the plant will grow wider and denser. Plant in full or part sun (although it will bloom best in full sun), and well-draining soil. Firecracker Fern is reasonably drought tolerant, but will need some supplemental irrigation during the summer.
