Sabal uresana

Blue Sonoran Palmetto

Blue Sonoran Palmetto – The holy grail of cold hardy palmettos. These ice-blue palms sit prettily atop our Rain Lily Berm, casting interesting shadows on the pea gravel and enticing viewers to ponder how such a cold color could originate from such a hot place. Sabal uresana is native to the Sierra Madre Occidental, which is the western side of the mountains that John Fairey loved so much, although he made no expeditions to this area. This palm can grow up to 20-30 feet tall with a canopy up to 10 feet wide. The fronds of our palms are icey blue and beautiful, but many other seed sources produce offspring that are much more green. One of the greatest characteristics of this palm is its cold tolerance, having recieved exactly zero damage in the Snowmaggedon of 2021.
